The man will face involuntary manslaughter charges

Police report that a GameStop employee shot a man who was stealing merchandise from a store in Florida, taking his life.

The employee, 33-year-old Derrick Guerrero, was working at a store in Pembroke Pines, Florida, when he noticed a man attempting a theft, according to the police.

According to the Associated Press, the man ran towards the business's front door with five boxes of "ultra-premium" Pokémon Scarlet & Violet trading cards, each priced at $120.

Guerrero then drew a "concealed firearm" from his waistband and fired a single shot, hitting the victim in the torso, as per the police.

"At no point did the victim threaten Guerrero or display any type of weapon," stated the Pembroke Pines Police Department in a release.

The man was transported to a nearby hospital shortly thereafter, but succumbed to his injuries three hours later, as reported by the police.

Guerrero was arrested on charges of involuntary manslaughter and was released on bond on Thursday. After his release, he "repeatedly apologized" for the incident, according to NBC Miami.

"I'm deeply sorry for the family," Guerrero told reporters. "I didn't intend for any of this to happen to the family. I'm extremely sorry for the family."

The police stated that Guerrero had purchased the weapon for his protection following a September robbery at the GameStop store. In court on Wednesday, according to NBC Miami, Guerrero's defense attorney mentioned that his client had been honorably discharged from the Marines after serving for ten years and had been advancing through the ranks at GameStop while taking care of his wife and two daughters.
