The man remained in a crop top and shorts
During a school board meeting in Arizona, a parent stripped down to a crop top and shorts in protest against a new dress code that would allow students to wear sleeveless tops and expose their midriffs.
Ira Latham was one of several parents gathered at the Higley Unified School District, confronting board members regarding the policy change. Latham expressed his desire for the district to implement policies that keep children in class, ensure their safety in the classrooms, and reduce unnecessary distractions. He stated, "This is not how this policy works."
He went on to argue that the vagueness of this policy places a significant burden on teachers and deemed it overly ambitious. "I have no other way to express my concerns about this policy; I will provide an object lesson."
After shedding his shirt and pants, Latham, who has four children, left the board meeting wearing a black spaghetti-strap top and denim shorts. He believed that a board meeting was not the appropriate place to address this issue, while other parents in attendance exchanged jokes and stared at him.
The father contended that a dress code permitting such clothing in the classroom is ineffective in promoting safety and reducing distractions, comparing it to a dress code similar to that of a public swimming pool.
Other parents at the meeting shared their concerns about the measure. One mother expressed her fear that this policy could increase bullying, while another argued that there should be a "clear, dignified, and established dress code."
A mother emphasized that, although she supported personal expression through clothing, it was also important for the district to set an example. "If you don't respect yourself, I'm not sure how you can respect others," she said. "So it's a distraction, yes, that's also a concern. But we must also raise these girls to be women in society with self-respect and dignity."
Despite the objections, the board voted 3-2 in favor of the dress code change.
