The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have issued an urgent warning to asylum seekers
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has issued an urgent warning to asylum seekers, citing a disturbing increase in denials of applications due to errors in the filing process of Form I-589, Application for Asylum and Withholding of Removal.
According to the U.S. agency, the rejection of asylum applications has become a concerning trend, largely attributed to errors that could have been avoided, underscoring the importance of submitting a complete and properly signed application to enhance approval chances.
The USCIS statement emphasizes the need for applicants to carefully review the instructions for Form I-589 before completing it. These instructions provide essential information on eligibility requirements for both the applicant and their spouse and children. Additionally, applicants are urged to ensure that the most recent version of the form is included in their submission, verifying the date at the bottom of the corresponding page.
The agency also warns against submitting passport photos, multiple copies of the form, or excessive supporting documents along with the application. Such practices can hinder processing and increase the likelihood of application rejection.
A crucial aspect highlighted by USCIS is the deadline for filing Form I-589. According to the agency, if an individual does not submit their application within one year of arriving in the United States, they will forfeit the opportunity to apply for asylum.
Adhering to these guidelines can enhance the chances of obtaining asylum in the United States and ensure a more efficient application process.
