Shocking images reveal a tragedy where the death toll exceeds 6,000, with more than 10,000 missing
Social media flooded with shocking images depicting the devastating effects of the cyclone, including corpses washed ashore by the sea, victims who had previously been swept away by the floods. The magnitude of the tragedy is heart-wrenching.
The city of Derna, with a population of 120,000 inhabitants, became virtually impassable when the heavy rains from Hurricane Daniel caused the collapse of two dams, flooding the city center and destroying neighborhoods, bridges, and entire roads.
Images shared on social media also show the hospital in the neighboring city of Shiha, where hundreds of bodies have piled up in the yard due to a lack of space in the morgue.
A shortage of resources has forced rescuers and volunteers to use household utensils to extract victims from the rubble and bury them in mass graves in the Martouba cemetery, located about twenty kilometers away.
The news page, Global Alert, shared a video showing various bodies on the seashore.
Likewise, another video emerged showing multiple bodies floating in the sea.
