The state is on high alert
The United States National Hurricane Center has confirmed that Hurricane "Idalia," which was downgraded to a Category 3 after reaching Category 4 intensity, made landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida.
The storm brought strong winds, floods, and cyclonic surges, causing concern in the state, which is still recovering from the damages caused by Hurricane Ian last year.
The NHC described "Idalia" as a "very dangerous" cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 201 kilometers per hour. The agency also warned about coastal flooding, which could reach depths of up to 15 feet due to torrential rains and cyclonic surges.
Florida isn't the only one alarmed. States of emergency have also been declared in Georgia and South Carolina. In these states, as well as in Florida, hurricane and other storm monitoring is in place.
"Idalia" is slightly worsening in its path towards the coast, but even a Category 3 hurricane can cause highly devastating winds and rains, especially in areas prone to past disasters.
