They are replaced by wooden animals
This weekend, the caretakers of the zebra donkey on Avenida Revolución presented a wooden model as a possible replacement for the live donkey, which has been a cultural symbol of Tijuana for over a century.
The decision comes in response to pressure from various animal rights groups, who have repeatedly reported animal mistreatment, making it difficult for the workers to continue their job peacefully.
The model is inspired by "Rubén," a donkey that has been a central attraction on the avenue for many years, bringing joy to both tourists and locals.

Francisco, a 60-year-old donkey handler who has been working since 1990, explained that the prototype was handcrafted from wood. Although opinions are divided, the overall response has been positive, although some still prefer the live donkey.
For now, the model is in a trial phase, and its adoption as a permanent replacement will depend on public reaction.
