The Governor of California has declared a "State of Emergency"
Landslides are severely impacting multimillion-dollar homes in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, and experts warn they will become more frequent due to the climate crisis, which is driving heavier rainfall and more powerful storms.
This phenomenon, active since the 1950s in this coastal city south of Los Angeles, accelerated after intense winter rains. Last weekend, the landslide movement increased drastically, causing devastating damage.

More than 200 homes have been affected by power outages, and several houses are tilted or displaced due to the shifting ground. Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the area.
Scientists explain that increased rainfall, driven by climate change, is one of the main factors triggering these landslides. As rain seeps into the ground, it weakens the terrain, causing slopes to collapse.

In California, rainfall is expected to become less frequent but more intense in the future, increasing the risk of landslides and threatening communities like Rancho Palos Verdes.
