Students at a nearby elementary school had to take cover on the ground after a Municipal Police commander in Tecate was shot at, an incident captured in a video recorded by one of the teachers.

At around 11 a.m., Commander Humberto Cota was ambushed with assault rifles while driving through the San Pablo area in his pickup truck.

According to preliminary reports, the officer later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. Earlier on Wednesday morning, a banner with messages from drug cartels threatening the Tecate police force was found displayed in the area.
