The school district is working on the case while the principal is suspended
A high school principal in central California has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted into a video showing him dancing in a manner some have described as inappropriate with the school’s mascot during a back-to-school event.
The Merced Union High School District issued a statement reporting that Robert Nunes, principal of Buhach Colony High School in Atwater, was placed on administrative leave effective August 19.
The district stated that this action was taken in response to an incident that occurred during the back-to-school event on August 16.
“The district is conducting a thorough review of the situation. While the investigation is ongoing, Mr. Nunes will not be participating in any school-related responsibilities or activities,” said Viviana Fuentes, the district’s director of communications, in the statement.
In the nearly 40-second video posted on social media, Nunes is seen sitting in an office chair in the middle of the gym, pushing himself backward, as the school mascot approaches him seductively to the tune of “Pony” by Ginuwine, while a group of students watches. Nunes then fires a cannon full of gold confetti and switches places with the mascot.
The video further shows Nunes placing his hands on the mascot's chest and sliding them down. Several students join Nunes and the mascot on the floor and ask if he would like to share any words.
“What happens at Buhach stays at Buhach,” Nunes shouts to the cheering crowd before wheeling the mascot off the floor.
Several people have commented on the video with mixed emotions about the dance. Fuentes stated that the school district will provide updates as appropriate while respecting the confidentiality of the investigation process. Here is the original report.
