Including cigarettes and vapes

Carlsbad could become the first city in San Diego County to ban all types of smoking and vaping of tobacco and cannabis products in multi-unit residences. The proposed ordinance would apply to both indoor and outdoor spaces of apartments, condominiums, and townhouses with three or more units.

Mayor Keith Blackburn and other council members have debated the measure, expressing concerns about the public health effects of secondhand smoke. Despite some objections regarding potential government overreach, the proposal was approved 4-1 at the latest council meeting.

If enacted, the measure would take effect in January 2025 and would exclude hotels, single-family homes with accessory units, and mobile home parks.
