Due to the technological outage since Friday, flights continue to be delayed

Travelers headed to San Diego International Airport are likely to experience delays again this Tuesday as airports across the country continue to deal with the aftermath of last week’s global IT outage. According to the airport’s flight status tracker, as of 8 a.m. Tuesday, 40 departing flights were listed as “delayed” and one flight had been canceled. Similarly, 48 arriving flights were reported delayed and five cancellations.

Nationwide, approximately 2,501 flights have been reported delayed, according to FlightAware data, while a total of 669 flights have been canceled, an improvement from the 11,788 delayed flights and 1,771 cancellations the previous day. On Monday, most airlines reported that they had begun to recover from the collapse caused by Friday’s technological outage. The failure, caused by a faulty software update from Texas-based cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, generated issues that affected millions of devices, among them the airlines' systems, which were among the most visibly impacted.

Delta was one of the airlines that had not yet returned to normal service levels by Monday, more than four days after the interruption began, leaving tens of thousands of passengers stranded and seeking alternatives. U.S. airline regulators have launched an investigation into Delta's response to the interruption, according to Associated Press on Tuesday. The federal investigation also aims to ensure that "the airline is complying with the law and taking care of its passengers during the continued widespread disruptions," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a post on X Tuesday morning.

While Delta has been the focus of transportation officials, delays at San Diego International Airport on Tuesday appear to be mainly affecting Southwest, American, and United Airlines. However, all canceled flights in and out of San Diego were Delta flights. In an announcement to travelers posted on its website Monday, Delta stated that its crews are fully staffed, but it will take additional time to resynchronize a complex critical operational system that ensures all flights have a full crew.

Airport authority officials recommend that those headed to San Diego International Airport this week check their flight status in advance, either on the airport’s online tracker or on the airline’s website.
