The blackout occurred amid a heatwave
Power was restored at a California men’s prison that had been running on emergency generators for three days following an electrical outage amid a heat wave.
The issue was resolved shortly after 2 p.m. at California State Prison, Solano, according to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The electricity had been out since Sunday at the facility in Vacaville, about 65 kilometers southwest of Sacramento.
Temperatures in the city exceeded 35.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday and remained hot throughout the week.
Potable water, ice, and fans were provided to help manage heat-related issues, according to the corrections department in a statement on Monday.
Additionally, medical staff conducted rounds to monitor the well-being of the inmates, officials said.
“The health and safety of all individuals living and working within our institution and in our community are our top priorities,” the Monday statement said. Authorities noted that the outage did not affect prison security.
The utility company Pacific Gas & Electric reported on Tuesday that the outage did not involve their equipment but was due to an issue with the prison’s equipment. The corrections department did not specify what the problem was.
California State Prison, Solano is one of the most overcrowded prisons in California. According to a corrections department report from June, the facility housed more than 3,900 men, representing 153% of its intended capacity.
